U.S. and Japan Collaborate on Hypersonic Missile Defense

The United States and Japan have joined forces in a groundbreaking collaboration to defend against hypersonic missiles, marking a significant milestone in missile defense technology. Northrop Grumman will lead the development of the cutting-edge Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) system to tackle the challenge posed by hypersonic weapons’ incredible speed and maneuverability.

The GPI program aims to intercept hypersonic threats during their glide phase, filling a critical gap in existing defense systems. This joint effort is set to enhance the capabilities of US Navy Aegis destroyers and Aegis Ashore systems, with an initial operational capability targeted for 2029 and full capability by 2032.

Northrop Grumman’s selection for the GPI program builds on its expertise in missile defense, incorporating advanced seeker technology and a re-ignitable upper-stage engine. The collaboration extends beyond the GPI program, with Japan’s Ministry of Defense leading the development of rocket motors and propulsion components.

With the US and Japan allocating significant resources to the GPI program, there is a shared recognition of the evolving missile threats and the need for innovative defense solutions. This partnership underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing complex security challenges and sets a precedent for future defense initiatives.
