The death toll from devastating floods and landslides caused by relentless monsoon rains in Nepal has tragically risen to 148, with 55 people still missing. The heavy rains, which started late Thursday, have wreaked havoc across most of the country, with the eastern and central regions bearing the brunt of the intense downpours.
Nepalese police spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki revealed that over 100 people have been injured since Friday, emphasizing the ongoing search and rescue efforts to locate the missing individuals and safely relocate affected families.
Rescue teams have already discovered 35 bodies from buses buried under landslides in the Kathmandu area, with a total of 3,661 people evacuated so far. The majority of victims hail from Kathmandu and its surrounding districts, underscoring the widespread impact of the catastrophic rainfall.
The unprecedented rainfall, described by local media as the heaviest in decades, has caused severe damage to critical infrastructure like roads and bridges. In response, the government has made the difficult decision to close all schools for three days.
