Ontario’s Failure to Help Children with Complex Needs

Karen Wilson believed a plan devised by experts, child welfare leaders, and parents to improve care for children with complex mental health needs would make a difference. However, two-and-a-half years later, the province has not implemented any of the 32 recommendations outlined in the plan. This inaction has led to prolonged waitlists for treatment and families struggling to get help.

Despite submitting a comprehensive report in March 2022, the province has not taken any steps to address the crisis. Wilson and other members of the roundtable are disappointed by the lack of progress, as families continue to suffer without adequate support. The recommendations included creating specialized services for young people in crisis and improving access to treatment options.

The Star’s investigation reveals a distressing trend where vulnerable children are left without essential care. Parents like Wilson, who have firsthand experience with the challenges of raising children with complex needs, are now advocating for urgent action to prevent more families from falling through the cracks.
