Lebanon agrees to elect President Mikati immediately

The Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, has announced an agreement for the immediate election of a president for the country. After meeting with Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, Mikati stated that they agreed on the necessity of promptly electing a consensual president.

Mikati also highlighted the government’s readiness to implement UN Resolution 1701, which involves sending the army to South Litani and adhering to the international Arab cease-fire statement in Lebanon. He emphasized the challenges ahead, including a major displacement crisis and a lack of resources to support the needs of the Lebanese people.

Mikati: Implementing UN Resolution 1701

The Prime Minister reinforced the importance of a diplomatic solution and mentioned that the Lebanese army is prepared to carry out UN Resolution 1701 under the appropriate conditions. This resolution requires Hezbollah to retreat to the northern bank of the Litani River, allowing for the deployment of the Lebanese National Army and peacekeeping forces.
