In a recent statement, the Electricity Consumer Protection Advocacy Centre has challenged the Ministry of Power’s claim that over 40% of Nigerians now have access to up to 20 hours of daily power supply. Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, credited this progress to reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Despite the minister’s optimistic outlook, ECPAC’s Executive Director, Chief Princewill Okorie, questioned the credibility of the data, calling the statistics “laughable.”
Okorie emphasized the need for accurate data collection and consumer engagement, advocating for resolving complaints rather than focusing on false reports. Adelabu highlighted infrastructure improvements, including the new Electricity Act of 2023, aimed at decentralizing the sector. He stressed the importance of stable electricity for economic growth, citing examples from developed nations.
Looking ahead, Adelabu expressed optimism for Nigeria’s electricity sector with initiatives like the Presidential Metering Initiative. The vision is to provide stable electricity for households, businesses, and institutions to drive economic growth and create employment opportunities.
