Consensus vital on constitutional bill to prevent turmoil: Fazl – Pakistan

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, re-elected for a five-year term, emphasized consensus among political parties for constitutional amendments to prevent political unrest. He opposed amendments benefiting individuals or security forces at the expense of fundamental rights, urging no party to seek political mileage through these changes. Referring to the failure of the Fata merger, carried out under US pressure, Maulana Fazl criticized the government’s attempt to amend the Constitution as unjust, stating the “fake parliament” lacked the mandate for such tasks.

Despite reservations, the JUI-F chief pledged continued participation in parliament, supporting the establishment of a constitutional court. He cautioned against amendments undermining fundamental rights or increasing the military’s visibility. Criticizing the focus on specific judges’ service tenures, Maulana Fazl denounced undemocratic moves like blocking PTI rallies. He also condemned the killing of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, urging Arab unity against Israel.

Meanwhile, Maulana Fazlur Rehman was re-elected unopposed as JUI-F emir, with Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri chosen as the party’s general secretary, receiving congratulations from PM Shehbaz Sharif.
