China has strongly condemned the U.S. for its support of “secessionist” forces in Taiwan, deeming it the “greatest threat” to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. This reaction follows U.S. President Joe Biden’s approval of $567 million in defense support for Taiwan, coinciding with China’s upcoming national day on Oct. 1.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, emphasized that the “greatest threat” and destabilization in the region stem from the activities of “Taiwan independence” forces and the external support they receive from the U.S. Lin reiterated that “Taiwan independence is a dead end,” warning of the consequences of the U.S.’s support for such efforts.
The Biden administration’s approval of defense support for Taiwan falls under the U.S. Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and marks the 75th anniversary of China’s founding, with China considering Taiwan as its territory. Since 2021, the U.S. has conducted 16 arms sales to Taiwan and provided military aid, demonstrating its commitment to the region.
