In a recent speech in Varna, caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov discussed the evacuation of Bulgarian nationals from Lebanon. He mentioned that two government aircraft flights will likely be used for the evacuation, with coordination at the international, including NATO, level. The safety of the evacuation is a top priority, and the Armed Forces are assisting in the efforts.
Zapryanov also addressed the investigation of a military aircraft crash in South Bulgaria and mentioned that the black box is in the Czech Republic for examination. He emphasized the importance of a comprehensive analysis of the incident to provide an objective assessment.
The Minister touched on the shipbuilding programme of the Bulgarian Navy, highlighting that it is progressing as planned. He mentioned upcoming purchases for the combat fleet, including drones and counter-drone systems.
Additionally, Zapryanov discussed the shortage of cadets in military schools, attributing it to medical dropouts. However, he noted an increase in applicants due to a planned salary increase for military personnel in January. The Minister attended an event at Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Varna to mark the beginning of the academic year.
