Mass Exodus from Lebanon to Syria Amid Israeli Airstrikes
As Israeli airstrikes continue to target Lebanon, over 100,000 people have fled to Syria, including both Lebanese and Syrian nationals, according to UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi. The UN agency is providing assistance at four crossing points for those seeking refuge from the relentless bombings.
Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati has reported that up to one million people have been displaced within Lebanon due to the bombing campaign, creating the largest displacement movement in the region. Displaced families are seeking shelter in schools and with relatives, while some are returning to Syria despite the challenges they may face.
President Bashar al-Assad has pledged support to the Lebanese people, forming a new government to prioritize assistance to those fleeing the violence. Israeli airstrikes have claimed over 1,030 lives in Lebanon, prompting Lebanese officials to request DNA samples from families of the victims to identify remains.
Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary-General, Naim Qassem, condemned the Israeli attacks, accusing the US of complicity in the violence. The situation remains dire as civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict.
