Türkiye strongly criticized the US decision to extend the arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot Administration, calling it a “grave mistake” that could lead to an arms race in the region. The Foreign Ministry of Türkiye expressed agreement with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on this matter, stating that the move would upset the delicate balance in the region.
The statement further emphasized the need for the TRNC to enhance its defense capabilities in response to the increasing armament activities of the Greek Cypriot Administration. Türkiye urged the TRNC to take all necessary measures to strengthen its defense and deterrence capabilities.
Despite objections from Türkiye, the Biden administration proceeded with extending the arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot Administration. This decision is seen as a point of contention between the US and Türkiye regarding regional security and stability.
