The NSW government is investing $20 million in a project at White Bay Cruise Terminal to create a more environmentally friendly experience for docked cruise ships.
Construction is commencing on the innovative Shore Power project in Sydney’s inner-west, providing electric chargers for cruise ships to reduce emissions and noise pollution while docked.
The new powered ports will result in a reduction of over 4000 tonnes of emissions annually, providing cleaner air and reducing noise for Balmain and Rozelle residents.
The project is set to start by late 2024, with Danish company Powercon winning the $20 million contract for this groundbreaking initiative.
By 2026, the port is expected to be operational, and all ships at White Bay will be mandated to use shore power, making it the first of its kind in Australia.
NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen praised the project’s environmental benefits, emphasizing its impact on reducing carbon emissions and improving the local community’s quality of life.
