Stalin urges Centre to take action on arrest of 17 Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy

Tamil Nadu CM Seeks Release of Fishermen and Boats from Sri Lanka

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has urgently reached out to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar regarding the arrest of 17 fishermen and the seizure of two boats by the Sri Lankan Navy. The fishermen, who set out from Rameswaram on September 28, were detained near Neduntheevu. Stalin emphasized the distress caused by such incidents among coastal communities and called for swift diplomatic action to resolve the issue.

Stalin also highlighted in his memorandum to PM Modi that as of September 23, 2024, a total of 145 fishermen and 191 boats were in Sri Lankan custody, marking the highest number in the past seven years. Urging the Central government to take proactive measures, Stalin requested immediate release of the arrested fishermen and their boats to prevent further escalation.

The ongoing detention of Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka continues to strain relations, prompting Tamil Nadu authorities to seek diplomatic intervention for a peaceful resolution.
