Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the army chief and friendly countries for their support in expanding Pakistan’s tax net, stating that the “elite must also make sacrifices”. He made these remarks at a press conference in London after attending the UN General Assembly session in New York.
The PM highlighted the crucial role played by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and China in securing the approval of a $7 billion IMF program, thanking them for assisting Pakistan in challenging times. He emphasized the need to strengthen Pakistan’s tax network and expressed gratitude to General Asim Munir for his role in the approval of the IMF program.
PM Shehbaz spoke about his positive meetings with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Bangladesh chief adviser Muhammad Yunus, focusing on strengthening relations with friendly countries. He criticized the previous government for damaging relations with China and destroying PIA, highlighting the efforts of the current government to stabilize the economy and political situation.
Addressing the May 9 incident, the PM stressed that the attackers must apologize sincerely, and expressed hope for a prosperous future for Pakistan, free from the need to approach the IMF again.
He also attended a reception hosted by US President Joe Biden during the UNGA session, where they exchanged good wishes. The premier described his meeting with President Biden as cordial in a post on social media.
