Notre-Dame stained glass dispute isn’t ancient vs modern

Workers fix a net to cover one of the iconic stained glass windows of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, Sunday, April 21, 2019.

The monumental restoration of the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral is completing, with its reopening scheduled for December 7 and 8. However, a debate surrounds the installation of contemporary stained-glass windows in six chapels. Emmanuel Macron supports this idea, aiming for a modern touch in the historical cathedral. The government, under Macron’s direction, will decide on this significant commission. The alliance between the government and the Church faces challenges as the debate intensifies.

The issue revolves around the redesign of chapels originally created by Viollet-le-Duc, a renowned architect. The clash between the traditional and contemporary art at Notre-Dame raises questions about preserving historical integrity while embracing modernity. The decision-making process, set for November, will determine the cathedral’s artistic direction.
