150 People Dead and Dozens Missing in Nepal Floods and Landslides

Heavy rains in Nepal have caused devastating floods and landslides, resulting in the deaths of approximately 150 people and leaving many others missing. As a response, authorities have ordered the closure of schools in affected areas for three days to facilitate repair work and ensure safety for students and parents.

The capital city of Kathmandu experienced severe flooding, with reports of up to 322.2mm of rainfall and the Bagmati River surpassing dangerous levels. In the aftermath, rescue efforts are underway, with police clearing mud and retrieving bodies of victims swept away by landslides.

The impact of these rains has been attributed to climate change and poor urban planning, exacerbated by haphazard development practices. Experts are calling for urgent investment in infrastructure, such as stormwater and sewage systems, to mitigate future risks.
