Monsoon Devastation in Nepal: Death Toll Rises to 126
The recent monsoon floods and landslides in Nepal have claimed the lives of at least 126 individuals, with many still missing. The toll is expected to rise as reports from various villages continue to come in. The torrential rains that began on Thursday have severely affected the eastern and central regions of the country.
Kathmandu, the capital city, has been hit the hardest with over half of the recorded fatalities. Reports state that this is the worst rainfall Kathmandu has experienced in decades, causing entire neighborhoods to be inundated. Essential roads connecting the city to other parts of the country have been blocked by landslides, further complicating rescue efforts.
Despite improved weather conditions on Sunday, rescue teams are working tirelessly to recover bodies and clear debris. The government has declared a three-day closure of schools and colleges across Nepal. The heavy rainfall has been attributed to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal affecting neighboring India as well.
