Nepal floods and landslides claim 126 lives

Devastating Monsoon Floods and Landslides in Nepal

Tragedy struck Nepal as the death toll from monsoon floods and landslides rose to 126, with many individuals still missing. The toll is expected to increase as reports continue to pour in from various villages across the Himalayan country.

Heavy rains since late Thursday have wreaked havoc on Nepal, particularly in the eastern and central regions. However, there was a glimmer of hope as weather conditions improved on Sunday, enabling rescue and cleanup operations to proceed.

Impact on Kathmandu

Over half of the recorded deaths occurred in Kathmandu and its surrounding districts, with reports suggesting this rainfall is the worst the capital has experienced in decades. Entire neighborhoods were submerged over the weekend due to flash floods in the city’s rivers.

Rescue teams worked tirelessly to retrieve bodies from buried vehicles, with power and internet outages reported in some areas. The Nepalese government has declared a three-day closure of schools and colleges countrywide in response to the disaster.

The heavy rainfall has been attributed to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal affecting parts of India as well.
