Japan’s incoming prime minister, Shigeru Ishiba, is focused on maintaining stability as he finalizes his government appointments after winning the leadership race of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. His selections for key positions in finance, defense, foreign affairs, and chief cabinet secretary indicate a reliance on experienced party members for his administration.
Despite not revealing specific cabinet plans, Ishiba hinted at the possibility of a snap election in the near future, potentially in October. The Tokyo Shimbun reported a tentative timeline for a lower house dissolution on Oct 9, with an election date set for Oct 27.
Among the appointments, former Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato is expected to serve as finance minister, with Gen Nakatani returning as defense minister. Takeshi Iwaya will take on the role of foreign minister, and Yoshimasa Hayashi will continue as chief cabinet secretary.
Additionally, former Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is likely to be appointed as the LDP’s vice president, and Shinjiro Koizumi may be named as the LDP election chief. In an interview, Ishiba emphasized the importance of accommodating Japan’s monetary policy to support the country’s economic recovery.
