The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is set to revolutionize the passport and visa application process by implementing a contactless biometric solution, as announced by the Federal Government. This move aims to streamline the application process, reduce challenges, and combat corruption within the system.
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, highlighted the benefits of the contactless biometric system, allowing applicants to apply from anywhere without visiting an office physically. The system will be pre-launched on October 1st, easing the burden on applicants and ensuring a more efficient process.
Under his leadership, the NIS has achieved key milestones, including clearing a backlog of 204,332 applications and installing e-gates at international airports for quick processing. The minister emphasized data security by establishing a dedicated data center and upgrading passport and visa systems.
Additionally, efforts are being made to reform the Nigerian Correctional Service and enhance the fire sector. Despite challenges like the recent inmate escape in Maiduguri due to floods, the minister remains committed to safeguarding the nation and supporting uniformed personnel.
This proactive approach to modernizing systems and addressing core issues reflects the government’s commitment to improving services and ensuring transparency.
