Heavy discharge of water from the Birpur barrage in Bihar has prompted the state government to issue a flood alert in northern and central regions. A record-breaking 6.61 lakh cusecs of water was released from the barrage, the highest in 56 years. Over 16.28 lakh people in 13 districts are already affected by inundation, with the situation expected to worsen.
Similarly, 5.38 lakh cusecs of water was released from the Valmikinagar barrage on Gandak, leading to traffic restrictions near the Kosi barrage. The state Water Resources Department is working around the clock to monitor embankments and take prompt action in case of any danger.
Rivers across Bihar, including Gandak, Kosi, and Ganga, are rising due to continuous rainfall, with Nepal releasing excess water into the Gandak and Kosi barrages. Several districts are at risk of flash floods, and the IMD has warned of heavy rain.
Thirteen districts along the Ganga are already experiencing a flood-like situation, with evacuations underway. Authorities are on high alert to mitigate the impact of the upcoming heavy rainfall.
