Austria’s far-right Freedom Party, led by Herbert Kickl, is set to achieve a significant victory in the general elections, according to projections. Kickl’s party has garnered 29.1% of the votes, placing them ahead of the conservative People’s Party. However, they fall short of a majority.
The Freedom Party has previously been in a coalition government, but the conservative People’s Party has declined to participate in a government with Kickl at the helm. Incumbent Chancellor Karl Nehammer rejected the idea of forming a government with someone who embraces conspiracy theories.
The election, dominated by issues such as migration, asylum, inflation, and the war in Ukraine, saw the Freedom Party making significant gains. The party is on track to secure 57 seats in the parliament, with the conservatives holding 51 and the Social Democrats 41. Kickl has promised to build “Fortress Austria” to ensure security, prosperity, and peace for the citizens.
As the results unfold, the future of Austria’s political landscape remains uncertain, with Kickl’s aspirations of becoming the “people’s chancellor” sparking controversy and drawing comparisons to Adolf Hitler.
