Facial Recognition Software Helping Bengaluru Police Identify Criminals
Facial recognition software used by the Bengaluru police has already identified 2.5 lakh faces with a criminal background in the last 90 days, resulting in the apprehension of 10 individuals, as per data from DH. The Facial Recognition System (FRS) under the Safe City Project is currently being fine-tuned for better accuracy by testing two software options to ensure seamless operation.
With 7,500 AI-powered cameras installed as part of the project, 1,000 connected cameras are licensed for use with the FRS, aiming to achieve 98-99% accuracy through machine learning and data analysis. This technology has proven vital in various instances, like tracking a habitual offender across cities and aiding in locating missing persons effectively.
The system has the potential for broader applications in monitoring large gatherings and events to spot individuals with criminal histories accurately. The Bengaluru Police Commissioner emphasized the importance of stabilizing the system’s matching accuracy to enhance overall security measures.
