Afenifere condemns NILGEC scandal as political rascality

The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has strongly opposed the proposed establishment of the National Independent Local Government Electoral Commission (NILGEC) by the federal government to oversee local council elections in Nigeria. Afenifere views this move as a means to centralize power and stifle democracy within the country.

During a recent meeting, Afenifere criticized the idea of NILGEC, citing concerns that it would replicate the inefficiencies of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and further undermine the independence of local government elections. The group also expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the recent Edo State governorship election by INEC and highlighted various irregularities in the electoral process.

In addition, Afenifere called for the implementation of state police to address internal security challenges and questioned the high cost of fuel despite the commencement of local production at the Dangote refinery. The organization emphasized the importance of decentralizing security measures to better safeguard the nation.

Overall, Afenifere stands firm in its commitment to safeguarding democracy, promoting decentralization, and advocating for the welfare of Nigerian citizens, both politically and economically.
