US defense chief warns full-scale war ‘devastating’ for Israel, Lebanon

The US defense chief, Lloyd Austin, expressed deep concern over the situation in Lebanon and northern Israel, warning that another full-scale war could have devastating consequences for both countries. He emphasized the importance of a diplomatic solution to allow displaced civilians to return home safely.

Austin urged both Israel and Lebanon to choose a different path and embrace diplomacy to prevent further escalation. He called for an immediate 21-day ceasefire to facilitate negotiations and secure a durable arrangement, including the release of hostages.

During an AUKUS defense ministerial meeting in London, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles and British Defense Secretary John Healey also expressed concern over the Middle East situation. They highlighted the significance of the AUKUS partnership in promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

The defense leaders discussed Pillars I and II of AUKUS, focusing on developing nuclear-powered submarines for Australia’s navy and collaborating on advanced capabilities. Healey stressed the importance of the AUKUS pact in a world of growing uncertainty, emphasizing economic and military benefits.

Overall, the AUKUS partnership aims to strengthen security, promote stability, and uphold international rules in the face of evolving challenges, including China’s opposition to the alliance.
