In a daring raid, the Thane Crime Branch seized over 5 kg of ambergris, also known as whale vomit, worth an estimated Rs 6.20 crore from a car in Dombivli township, Thane district. Ambergris is a valuable waxy substance produced by sperm whales and is highly sought after in the perfumery industry.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shivraj Patil stated that acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted a car in the Manpada area on Friday, where they discovered the illegal stash. The police arrested three occupants of the car, who are residents of Navi Mumbai, and also confiscated goods and mobile phones along with the contraband.
An FIR has been registered under the Wildlife Protection Act, and investigations are underway to uncover the full extent of this smuggling operation. This seizure highlights the ongoing battle against illegal wildlife trade in the region.
