The National Assembly is currently engaged in amending the constitution to address key issues such as local government autonomy, recognition of traditional rulers, and gender equality in government positions. The focus is also on enhancing equity in the federation through legislative amendments.

Former Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, emphasized the importance of prioritizing women-related issues and providing financial autonomy to local governments as mandated by a Supreme Court judgment. He highlighted the crucial role of traditional rulers in addressing security challenges across the country and advocated for their formal recognition and involvement in governance.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Jubrin Barau, stressed the values of democracy, justice, and equity in the amendment process. He called for collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive constitutional framework for the nation.

The commitment to promoting core democratic values and involving all relevant parties in the amendment process was reiterated by key leaders at a recent retreat in Kano, signaling a proactive approach to constitutional reforms.
