Russian lawmaker Andrey Kartapolov warned that if the West allows Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory with foreign-made long-range weapons, Moscow may resort to the nuclear option. This statement comes in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to update the country’s nuclear doctrine. The proposed change would classify aggression against Russia by a non-nuclear state with backing from a nuclear state as a joint attack, crossing the nuclear threshold.
Kartapolov emphasized that if the West authorizes the use of long-range assets against Russian territory, all options could be considered for a response. He also noted that the decision to use nuclear weapons ultimately lies with the Supreme Commander, creating uncertainty about the actual implementation of such a strategy.
