New York Mayor Eric Adams, once hailed as a rising star in the Democratic Party, pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of fraud and bribery. He is the first sitting New York mayor to be indicted, facing accusations of wire fraud, illegal campaign donations, and a bribery conspiracy involving Turkish citizens and officials.
Despite calls for his resignation, Adams remains defiant, proclaiming his innocence and urging New Yorkers to hear his side of the story. Accompanied by aides, he appeared in court wearing a dark blue suit, making no comments to reporters but giving a thumbs-up.
The 57-page document alleges that Adams accepted gifts including luxury international flights and meals from Turkish associates in exchange for favors. One instance involved influencing the approval of Turkey’s new high-rise consulate in Manhattan despite safety concerns.
The scandal has engulfed Adams for months, with allies resigning and federal raids at his residence. While some officials demand his resignation, Adams faces a tough road ahead as he prepares for reelection amid a housing crisis and mounting challenges in New York City.
