Norway is changing its asylum policy for Ukrainian refugees from six designated “safe” regions, no longer granting them automatic asylum. The decrease in arrivals over the past year was credited to cutbacks in benefits, but numbers have recently increased. The Minister of Justice emphasized the need for controlled immigration, with Ukrainians now undergoing individual assessments for protection needs.
The six safe regions include Lviv, Volyn, and others in western Ukraine. New refugees must integrate well, learn Norwegian, find work, and contribute to the country. Oslo aims to continue supporting Kiev amid the ongoing conflict, seeking approval from the Norwegian population.
With millions of Ukrainians fleeing to Europe, some countries are reducing aid and considering repatriation. Hungary, for example, ended housing subsidies for Ukrainian refugees. These changes reflect a shift towards stricter immigration policies in response to the influx of refugees.
