The Federal Security Service is investigating three journalists for illegally crossing into Kursk Region to report from Ukrainian-occupied areas. Kathryn Diss and Fletcher Yeung from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Mircea Barbu from Romanian news website HotNews are among those under scrutiny. The FSB claims that these journalists, along with others, breached the border with the support of the Ukrainian military. These investigations have now brought the total number of Western media professionals suspected to 12.
Since Kiev’s incursion into the region in August, press tours for foreign outlets have focused on Russian civilians stranded in the war zone. Journalists from CNN, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Deutsche Welle, RAI, and Ukrainian TV channel 1+1 are also being investigated. The Russian Foreign Ministry has called out RAI correspondent Ilario Piagnerelli for interviewing a Ukrainian soldier with a Nazi insignia on his cap.
