The National Association of Government General and Medical Dental Practitioners is set to go on strike from October 1, 2024, due to poor welfare conditions. The doctors under the state government in Kano expressed frustration over the severe shortage of manpower, with one doctor attending to 33,000 people.
Dr. Anas Idris Hassan, the association’s Secretary, announced the decision to strike at a press conference, citing the government’s failure to meet their demands despite an agreement in June. They are particularly aggrieved by the non-payment of hazard allowances, including post-COVID-19 allowances, as well as delays in salaries for newly employed doctors.
Concerns were also raised about the inadequate infrastructure and lack of equipment in Kano hospitals, highlighting the alarming doctor-to-patient ratio. With only 600 doctors serving approximately 20 million people in Kano, the ratio stands at 1 doctor to 33,000 patients, far below the WHO standard.
