India has lifted the ban on exports of non-basmati white rice to ease the surge in inventories and prepare for the upcoming harvest. This move is expected to boost global supplies and lower prices by increasing competition among major rice-exporting countries like Pakistan, Thailand, and Vietnam. New Delhi has set a minimum price of US$490 per metric ton for white rice exports, alongside reducing export taxes to zero. The decision to resume exports follows a series of measures to relax export restrictions on premium rice varieties. Earlier, the government removed the floor price for basmati rice exports to help farmers access lucrative international markets. This development comes after protesting farmers dumped sacks of basmati rice in Amritsar, Punjab, highlighting the urgent need for export opportunities.
