ICC prosecutor briefs Bangladesh leader on Rohingya genocide probe

The International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan met with Bangladesh transitional government head Muhammad Yunus to discuss the ongoing investigation into the alleged genocide of Rohingya. Khan announced plans to visit Bangladesh by the end of the year to further the investigation.

During their meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York, Khan updated Yunus on the progress of the ICC investigations that began in 2019. Yunus presented a three-point proposal to address the Rohingya crisis in South Asia, which Khan praised as “perfect.”

Khan had expressed regret during his visit to Bangladesh in July about the limited access to Myanmar hindering the investigation into genocidal crimes against the Rohingya. He called for increased international funding for the Rohingya, emphasizing that their welfare is a shared responsibility.

Yunus also inquired about the process for filing a case of crimes against humanity at the ICC related to the massacre during the July-August uprising in Bangladesh. Khan explained that Bangladesh could submit a complaint to the ICC, but certain rules must be followed.
