Breaking News: Israeli airstrikes reportedly target and kill Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, in Beirut’s southern suburb. Nasrallah, a long-time adversary of Israel, was allegedly killed in a major airstrike on Hezbollah’s main headquarters, underneath civilian buildings.
Who was Hassan Nasrallah? Born in 1960 in Lebanon, Nasrallah rose to become the leader of Hezbollah in 1992 after the assassination of his predecessor. Under his leadership, Hezbollah carried out strategic operations against Israel and successfully forced the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon in 2000.
Despite his initial popularity for resisting Israeli occupation, Nasrallah’s support for the Syrian regime during the civil war led to a decline in his popularity. However, he regained support for his role in supporting Palestinian resistance during the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
With Nasrallah’s death, international efforts are underway to broker a temporary cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah, aiming for diplomatic solutions in Lebanon and Gaza.
