The Federal Government of Nigeria is taking a significant step to cut transportation costs and improve infrastructure with the introduction of compressed natural gas. This initiative aims to reduce transportation fares by over 40% and provide immediate financial relief to passengers. Through a Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony in Abuja, key stakeholders from various sectors joined forces to formalize this plan.
Michael Oluwagbemi, the Programme Director of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, highlighted the government’s commitment to making transportation more affordable amidst rising fuel prices. The new plan will see a reduction in fares for both eight-passenger and four-passenger vehicles on specific routes. Additionally, efforts are being made to encourage the conversion of commercial vehicles to CNG, which is offered at a significant discount compared to petrol prices.
To support this transition, CNG fuel conversion centers are being established, and partnerships are being formed with industry players. The aim is to have reduced fares implemented nationally by the end of October, with measures in place to ensure compliance from operators. This collaboration between the government and stakeholders like the National Union of Road Transport Workers signals a positive step towards a more cost-effective and sustainable transportation system in Nigeria.
