Deputy President ouster bid stirs heat: Ruto, allies face double-edged sword

Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua is facing a potential impeachment, with MPs accusing him of various offenses, including promoting divisive politics and involvement in anti-government activities. The move, spearheaded by a group of legislators, could see Gachagua removed from office if two-thirds of Parliament vote in favor.

Historically, the last Kenyan vice president facing similar circumstances was ousted in 1989. However, the current Constitution provides protection for the DP against dismissal by the president. Gachagua’s fate hangs in the balance as political alliances and power struggles come into play.

If impeached, Gachagua’s political future and ambitions may be jeopardized, but the process could also lead to prolonged legal battles, allowing him to continue his pursuit of influence in the Mt Kenya region. President Ruto’s handling of the situation will be crucial, as the outcomes could impact his administration and the country’s political landscape.
