Burkina Faso is embracing renewable energy with the approval of a €6 million grant from the African Development Bank for the Dédougou solar project. This initiative, part of the Desert-to-Power program, aims to generate 10 gigawatts of solar energy across 11 Sahel countries by 2030, with Burkina Faso as a priority nation.
The funding includes a senior concessional loan and a reimbursable grant for an 18-megawatt solar plant in western Burkina Faso. The project, developed by QAIR, has also secured additional loans and a 25-year power purchase agreement with SONABEL.
Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, SEFA’s intervention ensured the project’s continuity, aligning with Burkina Faso’s renewable energy goals. Dr. Daniel Schroth of AfDB emphasized the project’s significance for energy security in the region.
This project marks an important step in diversifying Burkina Faso’s energy sources, addressing the region’s energy poverty and contributing to sustainable development.
