Israel’s Attacks on Lebanon: A Crisis Unfolding

Amy Goodman: Welcome to Democracy Now!, where we bring you firsthand coverage of global events. Today, we focus on the unfolding crisis in Lebanon, where Israeli strikes have left a trail of destruction.

Since Monday, over 700 people have lost their lives in Lebanon due to indiscriminate Israeli bombings, with tens of thousands fleeing the violence. The situation worsened as Israeli tanks crossed the border into Lebanon, raising fears of a ground invasion.

In a surprising turn, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled support for a temporary ceasefire after initially rejecting the proposal. The Lebanese Foreign Minister called for international intervention to prevent the crisis from spiraling out of control.

As Lebanon grapples with the aftermath of the attacks, infrastructure lies in ruins, and over a quarter of a million people have been displaced. The people of Lebanon face immense challenges, with schools converting into shelters and civilians becoming casualties.

Joining us from Beirut, Mona Fawaz, a professor at the American University of Beirut, sheds light on the ground reality, highlighting the struggles faced by the Lebanese population.

Stay tuned for more updates on the crisis in Lebanon as we delve into the “Anatomy of a Smear Campaign Against Rashida Tlaib” in our next segment.
