Afghan embassy in UK closes as Taliban severs ties – World

Afghanistan’s embassy in London closed after Taliban authorities severed ties with diplomatic missions established by the previous government in Kabul and dismissed its UK staff. The Afghan ambassador to the UK, Zalmai Rassoul, announced the embassy’s closure on September 27 at the request of the host country. The UK government denied involvement in the decision and stated that it continues to support the Afghan people.

Although the UK does not recognize the Taliban government officially, it acknowledges the necessity of engaging with the administration in Afghanistan. The UK mission to Afghanistan now operates from Doha. The Taliban has enforced strict Islamic laws, particularly impacting women’s rights. The group has also declared that Afghans abroad should interact with missions affiliated with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, their self-proclaimed name for the country.

As the situation in Afghanistan evolves, embassies worldwide are adjusting their operations. Diplomats from the UK embassy have reportedly been advised to leave the country or seek political asylum. The international community continues to navigate its relationship with the Taliban government while supporting the people of Afghanistan during this tumultuous period.
