Global Efforts Continue to Fight Mpox Outbreak in Africa

Efforts are ongoing to combat the current mpox outbreak in Africa, with over 32,000 suspected cases reported, most of which are in Central Africa, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been the epicenter of the outbreak, with at least 840 deaths recorded since the beginning of the year.

Vaccination Challenges

Africa CDC head Dr. Jean Kaseya noted the increase in cases across affected regions in Africa but highlighted the difficulties in testing, affecting the accuracy of case updates. While over $800 million has been pledged for the response, challenges in vaccine distribution persist. However, Danish biotech firm Bavarian Nordic has signed an agreement with UNICEF for 1 million doses of the mpox vaccine for African countries.

Germany and the United States have also made commitments to donate vaccines and provide funding to support African countries in their response efforts.

Vaccine Distribution and Awareness

Vaccine distribution is underway in countries like Rwanda and South Africa, with awareness campaigns urging acceptance of vaccines among the population. Despite challenges, efforts are being made to contain the outbreak, with Congo’s South Kivu province preparing for a vaccination campaign starting in October.

Overall, global solidarity and support are crucial in combating the spread of mpox in Africa.
