Polish Territorial Defence Forces Celebrate 7th Anniversary with Milestone Event

The Polish Territorial Defence Forces (Wojska Obrony Terytorialnej, WOT) are celebrating their 7th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in their development. This anniversary is particularly special as it coincides with Polish Underground State Day, a holiday that has been dedicated to the Territorials for the past six years.

WOT: Poland’s Youngest Military Branch Grows in Strength and Readiness Since 2017 Formation

Formed on January 1, 2017, the WOT is the youngest branch of Poland’s Armed Forces. Its primary mission is to protect and support local communities, both in times of peace and conflict. During peacetime, the WOT focuses on disaster relief and emergency response efforts, while in times of war, it plays a critical role in supporting Poland’s operational military units on the front lines.

Since its creation, the WOT has seen substantial growth, both in terms of personnel and capabilities. Today, it consists of 18 Territorial Defence Brigades, alongside a dedicated WOT Training Centre. Key developments include the establishment of the SONDA non-commissioned officer school and the Agrykola officer training program, which have further enhanced the unit’s professionalism and readiness.

A Pillar of National Resilience and Guardians of Poland’s Legacy of Defense

The Territorial Defence Forces have consistently demonstrated their value, especially in crisis situations, where they have been a reliable force for local communities. Their involvement in relief efforts during natural disasters and emergencies has made them a crucial part of Poland’s national resilience.

September 27 holds special significance for the WOT, as it was designated a holiday for the force by the Minister of National Defence in 2018. This date, marking the anniversary of the founding of the Polish Underground State, symbolizes the deep-rooted tradition of national defence and resistance that the WOT continues to uphold.
