Member of Transitional National Legislative Assembly Slams Speaker for Committee Chair Removal
A member of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) has criticized Speaker Jemma Nunu Kumba for removing the Finance and Planning Committee Chairperson, Changkuoth Bichiock, from his position. Juma Zackariah Deng, representing Jur River County, Western Bahr el-Ghazal State, on SPLM-IO ticket, condemned the decision as a violation of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement.
On Wednesday, Kumba reassigned Bichiock to the Chairperson of Energy and Dams Committee and appointed Michael Johnson Ayuen as the new chair of the Finance and Economic Planning Committee. Additionally, Nyadictor Bapiny Monytuil was made the Chairperson of the Defense and Veteran Affairs Committee, both from the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA).
Deng criticized the move, accusing the Speaker of disrupting the balance between different factions in the government. The changes were allegedly triggered by Bichiock’s proposal to redirect oil revenues from infrastructure projects to civil servants’ salaries.
Deng highlighted the importance of accountability and transparency in government spending, particularly in infrastructure projects like the Juba Bahr el-Ghazal road. He emphasized the need for proper audits and information dissemination regarding public funds.
