The Kebbi State Government is urgently seeking assistance in response to the devastating floods that have ravaged the state, destroying 329,000 houses and 858,000 hectares of farmland. The affected farmlands included vital crops like rice, millet, guinea corn, sorghum, and beans.
Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Birnin Kebbi, revealed these alarming statistics during a briefing, emphasizing the overwhelming impact of the flooding on the state. Despite the government’s efforts to aid victims, the magnitude of the disaster necessitates additional support.
With many farmers now facing destitution and food scarcity looming, the government is appealing for assistance to facilitate the resettlement of affected individuals. While plans are in place to provide improved seeds and agricultural inputs, more help is needed to restore the region’s food security.
Furthermore, Birnin Kebbi expressed disappointment over the delay in receiving the N3 billion flood mitigation grant from the Federal Government and the absence of support from Kebbi State representatives in the National Assembly. The government is prepared to use force to relocate communities in flood-prone areas for their safety.
