A Russian judge convicted Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in a short trial where no material evidence was examined. Judge Andrei Mineyev stated that the lack of case materials and the ability to type quickly led to a swift verdict.
Speaking at a conference in Yekaterinburg, Judge Mineyev mentioned that the case involving Gershkovich was small and lacked substantial evidence, resulting in a quick trial.
Gershkovich, the first foreign journalist held for espionage in Russia since the Soviet period, was arrested in March 2023. Accused of gathering secret information about a tank factory, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison but released in a significant prisoner exchange.
Judge Mineyev expressed his certainty that Gershkovich was involved in espionage activities. The judge’s speedy decision-making process was attributed to his ability to type quickly, emphasizing the lack of substantial evidence in the case.
