A new study has revealed that almost two-thirds of Irish adults have fallen victim to phishing scams, making Ireland the top target for fraudulent emails worldwide. Phishing involves deceiving individuals into sharing personal information through fake emails.
Conducted by the Worldwide Independent Network of Market Research, the survey included over 34,000 participants from 39 countries, with more than 1,000 respondents from Ireland. The findings showed that Irish adults are almost twice as likely to experience phishing compared to the global average.
In addition, one in five Irish adults reported being victims of credit card fraud or bank account hacking, significantly higher than the global average.
Despite these high rates of fraud, only 23% of respondents understood what happens to their personal information shared with data collectors, falling below the global average of 30%. Moreover, knowledge of artificial intelligence was found to be lacking in Ireland, with only 21% expressing a strong understanding.
Concerned by these findings, Ciara Reilly, Group Director at RED C Research, emphasized the need for increased cybersecurity measures and public education to combat phishing activities in Ireland.
