Israel Strikes Hezbollah’s ‘Central Command’ in Heavy Beirut Bombardment
Israel launched a series of major attacks targeting Hezbollah’s central headquarters in southern Beirut, resulting in the leveling of multiple residential buildings. The heaviest bombardment to date since the conflict escalated earlier this month, more than a dozen explosions rocked the neighbourhood of Dahiyeh, with at least seven buildings destroyed and fires raging.
Reports indicate over 15 missiles struck the area, causing widespread destruction and prompting civil defence teams to mobilize. As the explosions reverberated as far as Jounieh, Al Jazeera correspondent Zeina Khodr described the attack as massive and unprecedented compared to past airstrikes in the region.
Reason Behind the Attack
Israeli military officials claimed the strikes targeted Hezbollah’s central command hidden under residential buildings and warned of more attacks to come. Despite reports of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah being present at the site, sources refuted these claims, emphasizing civilian casualties in the densely populated area.
Impact on Residents
The attacks in Dahiyeh, already scarred from previous conflicts, posed a dire threat to its half-million residents. With many fleeing as Israel intensified its assault, the civilian population faced grave danger amidst accusations of Hezbollah using them as human shields.
While early reports confirmed casualties, including two deaths and dozens injured, the toll was anticipated to rise significantly.
Policy of Aggression
Despite ongoing ceasefire talks, Israeli PM Netanyahu affirmed Israel’s resolve to continue military operations, citing the need to protect citizens. Lebanon’s PM Mikati condemned the latest aggression, underscoring Israel’s disregard for international efforts to cease hostilities.
