Information minister enforces X ban citing national security: Pakistan

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar clarified that the ban on social media platform X was implemented for national security reasons, not to restrict freedom of expression. The ban on X, formerly known as Twitter, was imposed in February due to compliance issues and misuse by separatists and terrorists, particularly the Balochistan Liberation Army. Tarar emphasized the need for regulating social media to prevent terrorists from promoting anti-state activities online.

He mentioned the proposal for a Digital Rights Protection Authority to address complaints and ensure cyber and data security. The government aims to work with all stakeholders to develop effective legislation for social media platforms in the future. Tarar expressed his belief that lifting the ban on X is possible if compliance issues are addressed and terms are mutually agreed upon.

The minister’s insights highlight the government’s intentions to balance national security with digital freedom while promoting responsible online behavior.
