A ministerial meeting was held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Jordanian and Swedish officials highlighted the critical role UNRWA plays in providing essential services to Palestinian refugees.
Deputy Prime Minister Ayman Safadi stressed the importance of UNRWA’s work, especially in light of the ongoing tragedy in Gaza. He emphasized the agency’s vital role in providing food, shelter, and education to Palestinian children.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Stenergard called for immediate steps to ensure a ceasefire in Gaza and expand humanitarian access to the region. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini also emphasized the importance of sustainable funding for UNRWA to continue its operations.
The meeting was attended by international leaders who expressed their support for UNRWA’s mandate to assist Palestinian refugees. They condemned Israeli actions that hinder the agency’s work and called for international solidarity to ensure UNRWA’s continuity.
