In a recent poaching case, a supervisor’s testimony proved crucial in linking two rangers to the illegal activity. The supervisor requested tracking records for the vehicle used by the accused, which showed the vehicle’s presence at the location where two rhinos were found dead.
It was revealed that the accused rangers, Mkanzi and Sihlangu, were not authorized to work night shifts without approval, further incriminating them. Police officers also discovered cash payments for the sale of rhino horns during a raid on Sihlangu’s residence.
As a consequence, the court handed down jail terms to the rangers and ordered the forfeiture of the cash found in their possession. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) emphasized the severity of poaching as a crime that endangers species and the environment.
