Exciting news for the Greek Orthodox community as Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew expresses optimism about the reopening of the historic Halki Seminary. Efforts to reopen the seminary are progressing rapidly, with the spiritual leader hinting at a positive outcome soon.
The Istanbul-based patriarch’s remarks follow Turkey’s education minister’s indication that a roadmap for the seminary’s reopening has been prepared. A small delegation from the seminary has already met with the Turkish education minister’s advisors to discuss operational details.
The proposed formula for the seminary’s operation involves it functioning as a private university under the ownership of a foundation and the jurisdiction of Turkey’s Higher Education Council. The reopening of this vital institution, which has been closed since 1971, would be a significant development for Orthodox Christians worldwide.
Turkey’s collaboration on this issue signifies a broader strategy of rapprochement with Europe. The potential reopening of the Halki Seminary holds the promise of improving Turkey’s record on religious freedoms and human rights, as well as easing tensions with Greece.
If negotiations progress successfully, the seminary could welcome students once again within two years.
